Joe & the Talking Sandwich: Joe is a student who brings his lunch to school. Usually this isn’t a problem. But today – his sandwich is talking to him! It gets him in trouble with his teachers and the bus driver. But worst of all, it begs Joe not to eat him at lunch time.
Frankie the Vampire: Frankie is a vampire – a very bad vampire. He is afraid of the dark! This makes it very difficult for him to do the most basic vampire things, especially finding dinner. He needs help, and he finds it from a local psychic.
La Bise: Bryan is an American who is visiting France. He doesn’t want to be rude, so he’s prepared himself for the French custom of La Bise. But unfortunately, he didn’t listen to the entire explanation in French class! Bryan’s trip starts out fine but his cultural misunderstandings get him into more and more trouble.
La Baguette Magique: Each day, the local baker sells one special bread – the “baguette magique.” And each day, the recipient sees something special happen in his or her life. Joseph wants to learn the secret of the bread, but the baker tells him it will take time.
La Belle Soeur: Lucie and Annie are sisters. Annie is very jealous – she will get her revenge on her popular sister in a devious plan that involves mud, bacon and blue dye.
Canadaman: Josh is a typical boy, until he goes on a camping trip and everything changes. He starts being polite, he develops weird food preferences, and suddenly develops mad hockey skills. What is happening to him, and how will he use these new powers for good instead of evil?
The Loneliest Whale: There is a whale that sings at 52HZ, making him unique in the world. This short story is about the whale and is a fun explanation of why he is unique.
La Guerre du Pumpkin Spice Latte: It’s fall, and everyone is drinking pumpkin spice latte and eating pumpkin flavored treats. But a few student have noticed that people are acting strangely. Could it be due to the pumpkin?
Les Zombies Attaquent: Zombies have come to life and are attacking the school! How will the students escape? One teacher has an interesting theory and is willing to risk his life to try it out.
Having short stories available can also save time in the event of emergency absences where you need to provide substitute material. These are excellent additions to my “classroom library” for my heritage speakers and kids who are ready to do more. I haven’t read every one yet but what I have read are fun ideas and the supporting activities are creative, colorful, and useful for confirming / demonstrating comprehension.
This resource has been perfect as our textbook often doesn’t have level-appropriate reading passages for my kids.

I used one of these stories during distance learning with my level 2 students. I’m glad to have the set so that I can spread the stories out this year. It’s nice to not have to come up with a story yourself sometimes. The story I used was engaging.
It’s always hard to find French resources, but these short stories were great for my students to read and interact with.
