This Why Learn French digital escape game will have your students learning about the benefits of learning French while also learning a little bit about the French-speaking world, culture and words.
The game can be used as an introduction to the French language and culture – it’s meant for students who haven’t ever studied any French, but they will be surprised at how much they already know!
The Why Learn French activities include:
- Reading – read seven short passages in French about people and cultural icons of the French-speaking world, then match the descriptions with the person. Even if they’ve never studied French, the cognates and simple sentences are easy enough that they can understand them.
- Le monde Francophone – find 10 of the French-speaking countries in the word search. Hints pop up if they get stuck.
- International organizations – do you know the name of the organization? Based on a description of their purpose, students type the name of the group.
- French by the numbers – watch the video about French around the world, then match the statements
- French in English – Many terms have come into English from French – do you know them? If they get stuck, there is a link to a page that will help them find the phrase
The lesson is in genial.ly and does not require students to log in or have an account – just share the link and start! The activity is self-grading and students will move along as they get the answers correct. When students complete the lesson, they will be given a congratulations page to prove that they have done the work – you can have them take a screenshot of the page, or show it to you when they have finished.
