Do your students struggle when writing in French? This French story writing guided framework will allow them to write a short story in French – including a beginning, middle and end!
The goal of writing these stories is not only learn to write in French, but to allow other students to read and understand the stories. The framework will help students to write a story that will be comprehensible to their peers – no more AI slop or Google translate that they obviously didn’t write and other students can’t read without a dictionary!
The framework gives students resources to write their stories as well as rules to follow to make sure that their output is comprehensible.
For level 1: Focus on the “super 7” and use of cognates.
For level 2: Add the “sweet 16” verbs, connecting words and sequencing
For level 3: Add other tenses, negative expressions and more advanced connecting words
I’ve found that students who have no trouble reading and understanding basic French stories suddenly draw a blank when writing. They either can’t think of anything to write, they turn in a single sentence that isn’t really a story, or they go crazy writing something in English that they then use a translator to write something that is correct – but that they didn’t write. It’s not that they can’t write in French, they just have trouble remembering what they know how to say and focus too much on what they haven’t yet learned.
This framework guides them through the thought process and allows them to write a complete story with an actual plot – one that their fellow classmates will be able to understand!
