This French listening activity will have your students listening carefully so that they can listen and draw the illustrations for these 8 stories about Canadian culture!
Each of the 8 stories has two versions – one in the present tense, one in the past tense. As you read the story aloud, students will listen and draw what they hear on the printable illustration sheet.
Each French listen and draw story has a Canadian theme and limited vocabulary. While the stories are short, they have a clear plot with a beginning, middle and end.
If you’d rather use the stories as a reading comprehension activity, that’s fine! Students will read and draw the illustrations. You can also use the illustration sheet for your own stories.
This is a fun activity that my students love to do – it lets them sit back and just listen to the language but also use crayons or colored pencils. They have the chance to be creative without stressing over producing the language.
The stories are:
Les patins de hockey – Marc loves hockey and wants to go to his game, but he can’t find his skates anywhere.
Le sirop d’érable – Sophie plans to make waffles with homemade maple syrup, but runs into trouble until her grandfather helps her.
Je veux être bilingue! – Léa speaks both English and French and wants to share her love of both languages with her classmates.
Tim Hortons – Paul is a truck driver who loves his coffee and donuts from Tim Hortons! He forgets his wallet, and may have to skip his morning routine.
Bertrand le castor – Bertrand the beaver wants to build the biggest beaver dam in the river – but there aren’t quite enough trees to make it happen.
Les chasseurs – Léa is a First Nations girl who wants to help the elders of the community, but there aren’t enough funds to do so.
La fête du Canada – It’s Canada day, and Emma is looking forward to the fireworks. But the day starts out gray and cloudy.
Les bernaches attaquent! – School is starting soon, but a pair of Canada Geese have decided that nobody can enter the school building.
