The show Extra! is a thirteen-episode series for French language learners. it takes place in a Paris apartment/dormitory and has four main characters – Sam, Nico, Sacha, and Annie. Sam is an American who is trying to learn French as well as to make some new friends. He has a secret that will affect the way he relates to other people.
Each episode can stand alone, although it is more interesting to start from the beginning and watch them in order. I spread the episodes out over the course of a semester, but you could do them more or less frequently.
I usually show these to my second-year students during the second semester. They have enough vocabulary to understand most of the dialog by this time.
As the season goes on, Sam’s French skills improve – and the level of language used by the characters also goes up. The worksheets provide comprehension checks but also scaffolding resources.
For each of the Extra French episodes 1-4 episodes you will find activities such as:
- vocabulary list with English translations
- vocabulary list with no translations – have students fill in while watching
- comprehension questions in French
- comprehension questions in English
- flashcards for the vocabulary list
- a word spiral puzzle
- a crossword puzzle
- fill in the blanks
- Scrambled sentences
- a word search puzzle
There are many places to view the episodes, YouTube has them in both sub-titled and non-subtitled versions. For lower-level students, I would suggest the version with French subtitles. Click HERE to join my mailing list and get a free article about adapting a textbook to CI!
Reviews
My students loved using this resource and it saved me time. Merci!

I used parts of this as part of a substitute lesson plan for my students. The resource is a great resource, but you did not include the answers for the page of short answer questions. There is a French page and also an English page of questions; but there are no answer keys provided. Can you please add that as an updated link? I wanted something quick and easy to grade; without the answer key it’s a longer process that I had hoped (and I pay a good amount for the resource).
